Trust More, Receive More

To experience the all-powerful love of Jesus, make use of this most simple and effective of methods, which He Himself gave us: “The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is—trust. The more a soul trusts, the more she will receive” (Diary, 1578). “Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though her sins be as scarlet” (Diary, 699).

To help us to trust in Him totally, Jesus gave us Saint Faustina’s Diary and the image of His Mercy. Jesus tells us: “Sins of distrust wound Me most painfully” (Diary, 1076). “My Heart is sorrowful because even chosen souls do not understand the greatness of My mercy. (…) Remember My Passion, and if you do not believe My words, then at least believe in My wounds” (Diary, 379). “How painful it is to Me that souls so seldom unite themselves to Me in Holy Communion. I wait for souls, and they are indifferent toward Me. I love them tenderly and sincerely, and they distrust Me. I want to lavish My graces on them, and they refuse to accept them. They treat Me as a dead object, whereas My Heart is full of love and mercy. In order that you may know at least a measure of My pain, imagine the most tender of mothers who has great love for her children, while those children spurn her love. Consider her pain. No one is in a position to console her. This is but a feeble image and likeness of My love” (Diary, 1447). “Distrust on the part of souls is tearing at My insides. (…) Despite My inexhaustible love for them they do not trust Me. Even My death is not enough for them” (Diary, 50).

In these pain-filled words spoken to St. Faustina, Jesus reveals the main cause of that greatest and most fundamental disease of man, which is sin. This worst of man’s diseases stems from our distrust, weak faith, suspicion, or disbelief in God. In this way we close ourselves up and prevent Christ from saving us, from freeing us from the bonds of evil, from transforming and healing us with His love. Only Jesus can heal the wounded human heart and thus triumph over sin—the source of all our misfortunes and the cause of our spiritual and physical ailments.

We come to accept Christ’s merciful love through daily prayer and especially through the sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist. Jesus does not promise us an earthly life without suffering, but, in giving us our cross to bear, He carries the heaviest part of it Himself. Then, by way of total submission to the will of the Savior, our suffering becomes the road to salvation and a source of great and splendid graces.

Jesus wants us to trust in Him totally and desire only Him—to carry out His will in our lives. Then we shall thank Jesus for everything: for suffering and joy, for sickness and health, for life and death, since we will carry in our hearts that greatest and most precious of pearls—His love (cf. Mt 13: 44-46).
